Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVELMA MCCULLOCH 1918 - 2005 Velma Gertrude McCulloch died peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2005 at Deer Lodge Centre. She was predeceased by her husband Allan Whitten; her daughter Clare Eloise; and her sisters, Violet Raymond and Phyllis Cockerill. She is survived by sons, Cameron Hugh (Charlaine) McCulloch of Winnipeg and Christopher Allan (Judy) of Toronto; and by her brothers, Claire (Elaine) Cockerill of Sanford and Claude (Ruth) Cockerill of Selkirk. Velma was the daughter of Frank and Violet Cockerill of Gunton, MB where she received her secondary school education. She was a gifted athlete and musician and, as a result of her interest in health care, completed nursing training at the Misericordia Hospital in 1940. She joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1941 and served overseas in the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns, a period that provided the material for many anecdotes later on in life. While stationed in England in 1945, she married Allan McCulloch, a physician, and upon their return to Canada, began to raise her family in Winnipeg. Velma was a vibrant and outgoing woman with clear-cut ideas of style and conduct that informed her many activities in the community. She was a tireless and strong advocate for her husband and children and made many important contributions to the ongoing developments of Allan's medical practice and her children's education. Velma entertained with considerable flair and was memorable for her hospitality at the family's summer place at West Hawk Lake and for numerous parties and dinners at her home in Winnipeg. She took great interest in her sons' education and was a very strong supporter of Trinity College School (Port Hope, ON) in particular. She leaves behind five grandchildren (Kyle, Colin and Scott of Winnipeg; Michael and Denise of Toronto) who have inherited her gifts and interest in athletics and music. The family thanks the staff of the Deer Lodge Centre for the excellent health care provided to Velma in the last year of her life. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Velma's memory to the Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.
